Electronic Records Management (ERM)

Learn best practices and technologies for automating records management.

Electronic Records Management

Many organizations rely on paper-based principles to manage electronic records, but this doesn’t work with the growing volume, velocity, and variety of information organizations create and receive. Organizations need to streamline and automate their processes for capturing, storing, and managing their digital-born and digitized records throughout the records lifecycle.

Our Electronic Records Management (ERM) course gives you a thorough understanding of how to simplify and automate how electronic records are identified, captured, classified, and managed. The course covers the entire lifecycle of records, from creation and capture to retention and disposition, and is based on best practices and industry standards including ISO 15489. It also offers special emphasis on email capture and management as well as how to manage new content types such as social media.

Our Electronic Records Management (ERM) course will help you:

  • Identify, capture, classify, manage, and dispose of electronic records
  • Develop a business classification scheme, controlled vocabularies, and a metadata model for managing records
  • Leverage content analytics and metadata to automate management of electronic records
  • Plan defensible and secure retention and disposition of electronic records
  • Ensure access to electronic records over time
  • Conduct a business and technical assessment
  • Design and implement an ERM program and ERM solution
  • Identify and measure the benefits of improved records management

After passing an online exam, you will earn the AIIM ERM Specialist or ERM Master designation.

The Electronic Records Management Specialist course is approved for 13 hours of CIP maintenance credits and the Master-level course is approved for 26 credits.

ERM Specialist or Master - Which is right for you?

AIIM offers two versions of our Electronic Records Management training course; Specialist and Master. If you're only interested in learning the nuts and bolts of ERM, then you should take the ERM Specialist. This version of the course covers capturing records, metadata, taxonomies, retention/disposition, and more.

If your work experience is a bit more robust, then we invite you to consider the ERM Master course. This version includes all of the material in the Specialist and adds implementation (strategy development, business/tech assessments, business case, change management, and more!)
