Every three years, AIIM updates the exam to ensure it is relevant to today's workplace situations.

As a cornerstone of our exam evolution, Beta exams play a pivotal role in ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the CIP certification. We are seeking approximately 150 Beta exam test-takers to ensure that the CIP exam is technically accurate and reliable.

About the CIP Beta Exam

Together with industry leaders, AIIM updates the CIP Exam every three years to ensure it is relevant to today's workplace situations. The Beta Exam plays a pivotal role in the CIP Exam's evolution. It enables us to define the body of knowledge necessary for information professionals to be successful in the Intelligent Information Management practice. Your participation in the Beta Exam helps set the standards for the Information Management industry.

The exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions on the five domains that comprise Intelligent Information Management:

Creating and capturing information
Extracting intelligence from information
Digitalizing information-intensive processes
Automating governance and compliance
Implementing an information management solution

The exam is available online. It's a proctored experience. Candidates have 120 minutes to complete it. A passing score will be determined at the end of the Beta Exam testing period.

Once you have purchased the Beta Exam, you will receive an invitation to AIIM's Learning Management System, where you will find instructions on how to schedule your exam with our proctoring partner.

Getting Started

While there is a study guide for the current CIP Exam, the Beta Exam will have questions that may not be included in the existing study guide. In fact, your participation in the Beta Exam will help give the forthcoming study guide a new direction. You can view the CIP Beta exam blueprint to see the domains and topics that are covered.

Here are some tips to help you with the Beta Exam:

Take the free 100-question CIP Practice Exam, which was designed as a companion to the existing exam (not the Beta Exam), to assess your strengths and weaknesses.
Join AIIM+ Pro, which is loaded with training courses that cover the five domains in the CIP Beta exam.
Review the current CIP Study Guide, also available within the AIIM+ Pro library. This step-by-step guide to the CIP body of knowledge provides the context for the questions asked on the current exam.

What's Next

After you have taken the Beta Exam, you will know your results by the end of October once the Beta Exam testing is over. If you pass, Congratulations!

After earning the CIP, your certified status is good for three years. A few months shy of your activation period expiration, we’ll send you a reminder and a link to recertify. Recertification helps maintain the integrity of the certification by ensuring that CIPs remain up-to-date on current intelligent information management processes, technologies, and best practices.

If you need to retake the exam, there will be an opportunity to do so after the end of the Beta Exam testing period. (Additional details available in October.)
