Take the 2027 Certified Information Professional (CIP) beta exam at half price and help set the standard for how information is captured, governed, and prepared for AI. Registration is open now, and testing runs January 4 – February 14, 2027.
AI has changed information work. Organizations are connecting their content to AI systems, relying on AI-generated outputs, and asking information professionals to govern both. The CIP is changing to match.
The 2027 CIP is based on a new job task analysis of what information professionals actually do today. Of the practitioners we surveyed, about 60% already work directly with AI systems, govern AI initiatives, or support AI projects. Nearly 30% more say their organization is exploring AI now.
The updated exam tests the skills they said matter most. Instead of treating AI as a separate topic, the exam builds it into every domain through real-world scenarios. Read the full announcement.
The exam covers five updated domains:

New skills tested include:
The core skills behind the CIP are still here: records and retention, privacy and security, metadata and taxonomy, process automation, and information management strategy. The update also adds areas practitioners asked for, such as vital records, business continuity, and choosing vendors and AI tools.

The 2027 CIP was built from a 2026 job task analysis and guided by the CIP Task Force, a group of volunteer industry experts. Beta participants take the new exam first, and their results help set the passing score and refine the questions for everyone who follows.
The beta exam has 130 multiple-choice questions across the five updated domains:
Most questions describe a real-world situation, so they test how you apply what you know rather than what you can memorize. You'll have 3 hours to complete the exam.
The exam is delivered online through our partner Robinson Ryan. The exam itself is in a learning platform, powered by D2L, and proctored remotely by Honorlock. After you purchase, you'll receive an email with instructions for accessing the exam. Please allow up to 72 hours to receive access.
Your passing score isn't available on exam day. After the beta window closes, AIIM will set the passing score through a formal standard-setting study.
There's no study guide written specifically for the beta exam. The 2027 exam includes new topics that aren't covered in the current materials, and your beta results will help shape the forthcoming 2027 study guide.
Start with the 2027 CIP Exam Blueprint. It lists every domain and topic the exam covers, with the weight of each domain.
Other resources you may find helpful:
Using AIIM's preparation resources is optional and isn't required to pass. In line with national certification standards, the people who write CIP exam questions don't develop or review preparation materials.
Results aren't available right after the exam. After the beta window closes on February 14, 2027, AIIM will run a formal standard-setting study to set the passing score. You'll receive your results by email within 8–10 weeks.
If you pass, congratulations! You'll hold the full CIP credential and receive a verifiable digital badge to share on LinkedIn, in your email signature, or on your résumé. Your CIP is valid for three years. Before it expires, we'll send you a reminder and a link to recertify. Recertification keeps the credential meaningful by making sure CIPs stay current on information management practices, technologies, and AI.
If you don't pass, you can retake the exam as the official CIP 2027 exam at a reduced retake fee of $75, available in April 2027. You'll have up to one year from your retake purchase to take it.
After your exam, you'll also get a short survey about your experience. Your feedback directly shapes the final version of the CIP.

The value of the CIP isn’t limited to the certified individual - it extends to the company that employs him/her. There is true worth to an employer in hiring Certified Information Professionals and developing them internally.
