Bio
Like many Information Management professionals, Sam ‘stumbled’ into the challenging field of records and information management (RIM). While working as a certified engineering technologist for Dome Petroleum (now there is another story) he was approached by Dome Petroleum’s vice president of Administration to take over the position of supervisor of well records from a departing employee. In spite of his objections that he had no formal training in this area and very little experience, he was transferred into his new position and told to enroll in some RIM courses and learn on the job.
That was over 28 years ago. Since then Sam has obtained his CRM professional designation (in 1991) and his MBA degree (in 2000). Both of these accomplishments were in response to the growing evolution of his profession from ‘Records Management’ to ‘Records and Information Management’ and ultimately to ‘Information Governance’.
Along the way, he has held board level positions within the ARMA Calgary Chapter, the AIIM Western Canada chapter, and served on the Education Committee for ARMA International. He has also designed and taught two of the six RIM courses at SAIT Polytechnic in Calgary, as well as developing and coaching the Strategic Records Management on-line course. Sam writes frequently on subjects related to information management and information governance issues. He has presented at regional, national, and international conferences for both ARMA and AIIM.
Sam has served in an advisory capacity on the SAIT Polytechnic RIM industry advisory committee, and on Archives System’s OmniRIM CAB group.
In 2008, he was given the responsibility for Information Governance within ENMAX Corporation, a major utility company. His over ten years of experience as a RIM consultant in both Canada and the USA prepared him for his new roles of IM researcher, analyst, coach and trainer to the user departments within ENMAX Corporation.
The publication of the GARP Principles by ARMA International in 2009 allowed him to build a set of complementary strategic information management (SIM) tools and a SIM workbook that paved the way for the creation of a SIM plan and three year SIM roadmap for ENMAX Corporation. Information management has gained significant importance over the last year and the process behind the SIM workbook has been the main topic of both ARMA International and AIIM International webinars, and well as national and regional conference sessions that were given by Sam over the past 18 months.
The CRM Code of Ethics encourages RIM professionals to foster communication within the RIM community and to lead out in thought leadership whenever and wherever possible. With this goal in mind, Sam has teamed up with a Training and Information Technology professional to develop the SIMC Coaching website as a means to make Information Management and Information Governance tools, techniques and training available to many small and medium sized companies that do not have access to CRM or RIM professionals.
