Please excuse my formatting issues (Easier to read version here), but there was a terrific conversation on Twitter about SharePoint and it's position in the future that I wanted to bring to everyone's attention. What are your thoughts on all of this?

   1. Jeff Shuey jshuey I wonder if the Big Three #ECM vendors know that it's Game Over ... #SharePoint Won (even if it will take a few more years to realize)
   2. CherylMcKinnon CherylMcKinnon @jshuey ironically less because of Sharepoint itself, and more how they chose to react to it.
   3. Nick Inglis nickinglis @jshuey I don't know about that. SharePoint is strong, but I don't know if you can say that it's won. CMIS is still on it's way.
   4. Jeff Shuey jshuey @CherylMcKinnon Agreed. I do think the Big Three #ECM vendors have a few years left, but only at the top of the ECM Pyramid
   5. CherylMcKinnon CherylMcKinnon @nickinglis @jshuey - CMIS will fast track the process. The long tail vendors w alternative delivery models will pick up what msft can't
   6. Jeff Shuey jshuey @nickinglis Sort of, but CMIS is a set of standards. The problem with standards is ... you get the lowest common denominator.
   7. CherylMcKinnon CherylMcKinnon Blogged about this topic last week: http://bit.ly/cdXjaM #ecm
   8. Nick Inglis nickinglis @jshuey @CherylMcKinnon SharePoint may end up owning the Fortune 500, but there are lots of comps that SP is too bloated & expensive for.
   9. CherylMcKinnon CherylMcKinnon @nickinglis that's where open source #ecm, hosted, saas and cloud fills the gap.
  10. rileybeebs rileybeebs U might get beat up RT @jshuey wonder if the Big 3 #ECM vnd's know it's Game Over #SharePoint Won (even if it takes a few yrs to realize)
  11. CherylMcKinnon CherylMcKinnon @jshuey no - it is the greatest common ground.
  12. Jeff Shuey jshuey @rileybeebs I might, but I know you'll be in my court <G>
  13. Nick Inglis nickinglis @CherylMcKinnon Completely agree. IMHO Nuxeo is one of the better positioned solutions in that market, along with Alfresco.
  14. Jeff Shuey jshuey @CherylMcKinnon I don't know. I lived thru several other standardization processes and have not seen the greatest good come out of them.
  15. Jeff Shuey jshuey @CherylMcKinnon I'm optimistic the vendors (and customers) will rally around the CMIS cause and really make it into something worthwhile
  16. CherylMcKinnon CherylMcKinnon @jshuey the difference this time is that people are getting hands dirty with real stuff now. It's awesome & exciting what's out there #cmis
  17. Nick Inglis nickinglis @jshuey I think when CMIS comes out, a good portion will see SharePoint as an expense that isn't worthwhile when there are lower cost alts.
  18. rileybeebs rileybeebs @jshuey I got your back! I got beat up for a similar post.
  19. CherylMcKinnon CherylMcKinnon http://www.slideshare.net/nuxeo/cmis-and-its-value-to-business-nuxeo-open-source-ecm-gilbane-conference-may-2010
  20. Jeff Shuey jshuey @CherylMcKinnon @nickinglis I think you are both right. There is MUCH more at risk for the Vendors ... they MUST adopt CMIS.
  21. Jeff Shuey jshuey @rileybeebs Thanks. I'm not a 100% SharePoint Fan Boy, but I do see writing on the wall. The next $1B Market oppty is where we live
  22. rileybeebs rileybeebs @jshuey@CherylMcKinnon @nickinglis I think we will see more vertical play, & connectivity w/ SharePoint Esp. now with the new BCS features
  23. rileybeebs rileybeebs @jshuey People need accept that it's also a Platform, even if it does just used as a hand off.
  24. Nick Inglis nickinglis @rileybeebs I've heard that one, but I'm not convinced that there won't be a drop of SP to other solutions that have the same connectivity.
  25. Bryant Duhon bduhon @jshuey Maybe I'm just being a contrarian, but I tend the think the game's just beginning. After all, how big was the board before?
  26. CherylMcKinnon CherylMcKinnon @rileybeebs "platforms vs. suites vs. condominiums" :-)
  27. rileybeebs rileybeebs @nickinglis big story is how it plays with Office 2010. For a MS shop I'm hard pressed to find a reason why not use at least SP foundation
  28. rileybeebs rileybeebs @nickinglis I think it's not the big 3 that have a threat, but the tons of little guys ...
  29. Jeff Shuey jshuey @bduhon I am a contrarian too. I think it's a new era of #ECM - mainly because of changes in computing paradigms & perceptions of "content"
  30. CherylMcKinnon CherylMcKinnon @rileybeebs look under the covers... the leaders were all architected in the middle 90s - at some point the creakiness sets in.
  31. rileybeebs rileybeebs @nickinglis @CherylMcKinnon These convo's scare me. Esp. w/ 140 chars I'm not a hater I swear. But no doubt #ECM world changes w/ #SP2010
  32. rileybeebs rileybeebs @CherylMcKinnon everything has a life cycle right?
  33. CherylMcKinnon CherylMcKinnon @rileybeebs yep
  34. Nick Inglis nickinglis @rileybeebs I'm not sure the #ECM world changes nearly as much as everyone has been portraying.
  35. Bryant Duhon bduhon @jshuey Agree. Just dubious about declaring #sharepoint #ecm champion just yet though.
  36. Jeff Shuey jshuey @bduhon It depends upon your method of measurement, but by several measures (revenue, seat count, et al) #SharePoint won in #ECM (blog post?)
  37. Nick Inglis nickinglis @rileybeebs @CherylMcKinnon @bduhon @jshuey I'm pretty sure this conversation will be spawning several blog posts.
  38. Bryant Duhon bduhon @jshuey Yes, please! "win" troubles me still. Implies the world is saturated with #ECM solutions and all content is under control.

Agree with your initial hypothesis - it's game over. I think Cheryl make the point of nothing the historical of MS2010's launch for that specific reason. As an industry dude, vendor, and advocate, I'm steering customers and partners to SP. As Bugs Bunny said, if you can't beat them, join'em.

I'm still hesitant on suggesting SharePoint. I don't think it has 'won'. I think that a standards based system at a lower cost would be a better choice. That way if, in the future, SharePoint does in fact corner the market it will make for an easy migration. I just can't justify the cost to value. There are other systems out there with more value for less cost. If the company you're talking to needs a specialized feature, maybe SP is the right choice, but I think SP is getting recommended much more than it needs to be.
