Hiding the Activities I am following section of edit User Profiles

There are situations where you may want to keep users from changing their Activities I am following settings on their edit profile page as shown below.

It is not exactly straightforward to do this and definitely not intuitive. This technique can be used to hide any section of the User Profiles on the edit profile page (i.e. Basic, Details, Custom Properties).

Steps

  1. Go to Central Administration->User Profile Properties
  2. Click on Manage Sub-types
  3. You need to create a new Sub Type. It doesn’t matter what you put it in it. In this case you won’t be using it but SharePoint won’t let you choose not to show a section if you don’t have more than one. Create a new sub type as shown below.

  4. After you have created the new sub type go back to User Profile Properties
  5. Click on the Newsfeed Settings section as shown below and choose Edit
  6. Uncheck Default User Profile Subtype and click OK as shown below.

That is all there is to it. You can do this with any section and you can have different views for different groups of users (like one for contractors and one for permanent employees).

Hi Michael, thanks for your article :)

I did and extra step. I deleted the new sub-type (ActivitiesGone in your sample) and the Newsfeed Settings has been deleted to.

Do you know if it's possible to restore (or recreate) it?

Thank you
Riccardo

Well, you should be able to create a New Section in the user profile properties page. The name for the property is SPS-Section-Preferences. But when I tried that I got an 'Invalid URI' error. I may try applying the August CU to my DEV machine and see if that helps.

Yes, you're right. I SHOULD be able, but I got the error you noticed. I suppose that this is not related to invalid chars, but to the fact that SPS-Section-Preferences is a reserver phrase. In my SP2010 farm I already installed the June CU. I will try with the August updates :)

OK...how do you unhide?

This sounds like it might delete the entire section associated with this new sub-type if you want to "unhide" by deleting the newly created sub-type?! Thanks

Remove Existing Sub-types
Please select the sub-type you want to remove. All the profile properties associated with the selected sub-type will be deleted. If there are profile properties shared by this sub-type with other sub-types they will not be removed.
