If I had $1 for every time I’ve heard the ‘How should I approach a Microsoft social solution’, I wouldn’t be blogging right now. It is a great question, and despite a recent roadmap announcement from Microsoft, the way forward isn’t always clear. Is Microsoft straightforward “Go Yammer” direction complete?

To summarize, there are four options now: SharePoint 2013, Office 365 (SharePoint Online), Yammer, and NewsGator. And then combinations of the above. But where to start? We’ve prepared a graphic to help direct your decision based on two primary criteria: Social Adoption and Cloud Adoption.

Microsoft Social Mapped to Adoption Maturity

Cloud Adoption: At one end are companies that do not plan to move to the cloud. At the other end are the early adopters and are aggressively pushing forward now. Consider where your company is on that spectrum. If you plan to adopt soon, consider Yammer and/or Office 365. I’ve posted already on how the two are starting to converge, and will continue to do so over the next 24 months. If you expect to move in a few years or don’t expect to move at all, look to SharePoint 2013.

Social Adoption: Again, there is a wide spectrum. At one end are companies that don’t see the value and don’t plan to adopt social tooling. At the other end are companies that are aggressively pushing forward and see it as core to their business. If social is core, look to Yammer or NewsGator. If you haven’t reached that point, SharePoint 2013 or Office 365 should be enough.

Where does your company fall? Does the option make sense? Ping me at @jdunmall with your thoughts.
