PDF-A will outlast all of us, it an ISO standard and looks great. It's shallow, but the quality of a PDF-A document is significantly better than a scanned image, and is supported by most vendors. And if you add to Dan's inputs, PDF/A also comes with XMP which allows it to keep an audit of changes to it - kind of a DNA.

Also the ability to embed fonts within it, means, it can be viewed in exactly the same way as it was created. A critical element to a record.
