In continuing with our series of interviews with the presenters from our Social Business Conference which is being held completely online this September 8, 2011. I asked Gayle Weiswasser, Vice-President, Social Media Communications; Discovery Communications, a few questions regarding her presentation with us for the event. She was kind enough to respond and share her story.
What are you going to speak about at the Social Business virtual conference Sept 8th?
I will be speaking about how Discovery uses real time interaction with fans via social platforms to further our goals for social media: engaging with fans and building brand loyalty; driving tune-in; driving traffic to our fan sites; and learning about our fans. We have used real-time interaction through a variety of platforms and tactics to build our fan base and offer relevant, valuable content to our fans.
Do you have any examples of implementations or case studies?
Yes - the presentation will be full of current examples of tactics and strategies we have implemented. In particular, we will focus on Shark Week '11 and how we used social media during that key week for Discovery Channel to build buzz and drive tune-in.
What will the attendees learn from your presentation?
Attendees will be able to walk away from the presentation with actionable ideas and advice for using real-time social media interaction on their own platforms. We will offer universal take-aways that go way beyond the TV/entertainment industry.
How long would you say have been involved with social media from a business perspective?
I have been working with social media for about 5 years. I was at a crisis communications agency for several years, where I helped with social media strategy and outreach on behalf of large companies. I've run the social media communications team at Discovery since November 2009.
How have you seen social business impact your job/organization for the better?
We have seen our social footprint grow dramatically over the last few years, which provides a very rich opportunity for us to engage with our fans. Social media has become an incredibly effective way to reach fans, build buzz around programming, and strengthen the relationships between fans and talent.
