Stop, look and listen – 3 simple rules for safe SharePoint

Many of you will be familiar with the saying, aimed at helping people cross the road safely by following three simple rules.

Stop

• Find the safest place to cross then stop.
• Stand on the pavement near the kerb or the edge if there is no kerb.

Look

• Give yourself lots of time to have a good look all around.
• Make sure you can see if anything is coming and drivers can see you.

Listen

• Listen carefully because you can sometimes hear traffic before you can see it.
• Never cross the road whilst chatting to people, listening to your iPod or talking on your mobile phone.

When it is safe to cross, walk straight across the road. Do not walk diagonally. Keep looking and listening for traffic while you cross.

Stop

• Find out what it is your business really want and then stop.
• Evaluate what SharePoint can do for you out of the box.

Look

• Give yourself time to have a good look all around at how these might help you.
• Make sure you can see the options available and the business can see what you’re doing.

Listen

• Listen carefully because you can sometime hear what Microsofts planning before you see it.
• Never make decisions without clearly aligning to your vision and strategy

When it is safe to move forward, implement the solution. Do not lose sight of the goal and drift off into other areas. Keep looking and listening while you use SharePoint.

Applying these simple rules every time you cross the SharePoint road will help you avoid costly injuries from overly complicated solutions and provide pain-free upgrades and happy users.
