EMC is taking Documentum in the direction of Case Management. Case Management is the next logical step, imho, for records / content / document management since it reflects the application of document and records management to business process.
Typically what happens is that there is a business need for records management, usually caused by a law suit that cost millions. Then the solution is whip sawed into place by emulating an existing paper based process with no effort for process re-enigneering.
It is changing at the top of larger organizations that have aleady created document and record management solutions and have realized the value of reengineering their business processes to take advantage of electronic processes.
We have created a simple demo for the EMC xCP Challenge. Currently we are in 3rd place and stand a chance of presenting at EMC World Momentum this year. (I hope this happens!) Given the automated out of the box forms in support of extensive BPM capability TaskSpace, the corner stone of the xCP product line, we were able to cook up a simple demo application for engineering submissions in under 25 days of effort. It highlights the case management perspective in combination with our lightwieght Gateway approach to exchanging or receiving content from external vendors.
