Vendor independent real information management work

Dear all. I use AIIM a lot to find good ideas. But more often than not, when I think I have come across something new and brilliant, it is a document written by a vendor of software. I have nothing against Autonomy or any other vendor, but when at long last I found a document on nest generation archiving, it was an Autonomy document.
I would like to have a discussion on experience in making real, vendor-free information archtectures, real technology free functional specifications and real Sharepoint free articles on collaboration.
How would I comvince my company that the solution is neither SAP nor Sharepoint for document and records management, but to conduct a functional analysis based on metadata sharing, real output needs and real user satisfaction from day 1?
