The Inevitable Adoption of Sharepoint

Hey folks! Currently I'm working on a research project in ECM, primarily focused on the effects of SharePoint's emergence in the industry. The enterprise content management industry is fairly new territory for me, so any input is greatly appreciated.
1) Why would someone consider migrating from a legacy vendor like Open Text, to a product like Sharepoint? In other words, what is the over-arching reason (either technological or financial) to consider throwing out legacy in favor of Sharepoint?
2) At what level in a customer are ECM / RM decisions made? How significant is the cost of ECM to a customer? (in terms of % of budget)
3) In general, when Sharepoint is adopted, will Open Text and other legacy vendors, remain in use at a customer either as the back-end or in niche applications? Would a customer need to run both systems in parallel for a while to ensure reliability and integrity? If so, how long would the overlap remain?
The more detail the better. I'm looking for as many perspectives as possible; any and all answers are welcome. If you would rather discuss in futher detail via email or over the phone, please don't hesitate to get a hold of me. Thank you!
