Slam Dunk - Just Automate It

I cannot tell you how many times I have heard this in relation to back office processes. "We need to automate this process and stop all of the human/manual activities around here." Really? Do you think it is that easy?
Do you really know what the process is and all of the activities that support that process? Do you really know the impact change will have in this part of an end to end process? How will what you change, change the way in which other processes inter-related to this one be impacted?
I am sure that many of you have run into this situation or are struggling with it now. The idea of process automation without first understanding the process is like trying to drive a car through an obstacle course with a blindfold on. Chances are, you will run itno unforeseen obstacles and not get the result you seek.
So my question to you is simply this, How do you or are you now managing your process automation projects to ensure it will succeed?
