Looking for examples of SharePoint 2010 ECM deployment topologies for geographically dispersed sites.

Does SharePoint only support central repository for content/documents? Or can it support a central repository with caching storage in remote locations for recently used documents to mitigate latency issues and then perform say batch update to the central repository for any changes to documents?

Or is there a support for multiple distributed content/document repositories, with some form of replication?

The idea is to store metadata only in the database but the content/document outside of the database.
