Replacing File Shares

Fellow AIIM Members:
I am starting my first discussion to ask for perspectives on whether fully replacing file shares with an ECM solution is currently a practical possibility.
We are currently looking at expanding our IBM FileNet ECM product to our business units (it is currently only used by our IT department). We plan to first migrate content, then apply retention rules with the Records Management module, and e-discovery capabilities.
One of the critical issues that we have identified is that we could not store files with "active links" (i.e. one Excel spreadsheet linked to another that automatically updates values) in this repository, which presents an issue for multiple users.
We have concerns that simply "adding" another solution to our current technology environment to manage some content without getting rid of something else would actually make managing content more difficult instead of easier, which is the goal!
I know this question has been asked before and there is some information on this topic available, but if anyone is willing to offer perspectives or real-world examples of replacing files shares with ECM (if not fully, how far were you able to go), it would be appreciated.
Thank you.
