Records Retention

Community Topic(s):

Keywords: retention schedule, guidelines, records retention

To many, I answer the familiar question of what do you do with, "I work in an association."  And to many, that is enough.  For the more genuine, the conversation then goes into the type of association I work for and information management in general.

Most people understand the need for better organizational information policies, but somehow, most organizations fail to instate an effective records management program.  Somewhere in collective thought, common sense is lost.  Or maybe what makes sense to me, is oranges to you so we decide it's easier to play in separate sandboxes (alright, maybe this sentence only makes sense to me).

But in the end, there is only one sandbox for each org, and if we get in trouble at some point, all of our sand piles will be examined.  And you never know what little Billy may be hiding in his if you don't have a strong records retention policy.

So, for those who want to easily explain what a records retention schedule is and how an org could create an efficient one, I recommend AIIM's record retention guide for pro members.  It's basic, but maybe basic will make sense to those who have just been hearing apples when you've been shouting the need for good records management.  www.aiim.org/membersonly.

I'm interested in hearing how other orgs have successfully switched the light bulb on -- going from several individual records plans to one, effiecient one.
