Enhancing operations through Mobile use

Community Topic(s):

This is something I hear often. We are going to use use mobile devices to enhance our operations. The only thing that will change is the device itself, enabling us to access information and transact business 24/7 from anywhere on the planet. Really? The only thing that changes is the device?

I want you to seriously think about that statement, the only thing that changes is the device. If you truly believe that, I want you to now think about this one, security and process need to be part of your mobilization strategy for your organization. When we talk about process, you may think it is a simple thing and using expense reporting as an example, you use a cloud application and capture receipts through the camera of your smartphone or tablet rather than send them in with a spreadsheet as an email attachment. Much improved process but it has changed and will require training. From a security perspective, do you really want your employees working on or accessing information that is of a sensitive nature or that contains intellectual property in-flight where the person(s) in the next seat can see it?

In my view, mobilization of the workforce is a great thing and a direction that many organizations are taking today. I am curious if yours has taken time to plan mobilization or opened a Pandora's box by just allowing mobile use.

 What say you about Mobile use?
