CIMS Maturity

Community Topic(s):

Keywords: CMIS, ECM interoperability

CMIS was a good initiative in a multi-vendor ECM era, but unfortunately CMIS has made little headway since it was first launched in May 2010. What do you think is hindering the progress of interoperability standards? Is it the reluctance of ECM vendors to open-up their systems or the lack of initiatives from the community?

I reject your premise that CMIS has made little headway. There are now implementations from all of the major ECM players, a reference implementation is freely-available in Apache Chemistry (which graduated to a top-level project in the Apache Software Foundation early last year), and a 1.1 version of the spec is currently in draft. I actually think it is impressive that so much headway has been made despite the 30+ vendors involved. Maybe you could clarify why you think headway has not been made, and please provide specifics.
