Maintaining the Certification
In this rapidly changing world, it is critical that Certified Information Professionals (CIPs) stay up-to-date with changes in information management processes and technologies. Accordingly, in order to retain the certification professionals will be required to recertify every three (3) years through one of the following methods:
- Retake the exam. The exam will be updated on a regular basis; CIPs who wish to follow this route will be required to pay the current exam fee at the time of the retest.
- Take, and submit, 45 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) over a three-year period. The structure for the CEUs is administered by the AIIM Education Advisory Groups. One contact hour of relevant education counts as 1 CEU. CIPs will also be required to submit a fee of $25 per year for AIIM Professional members and $50 for non-members. ($75 for the 3-year period for AIIM Professional members and $150 for non-members).
CEUs will be awarded for any relevant information management-related education, whether delivered by AIIM or by another group.
-
AIIM-provided education. To document CEUs for AIIM-provided content, such as AIIM Certificate Program courses, chapter meetings, or webinars, CIPs will need to document their attendance at a particular event.
-
Non-AIIM-provided education. For events, courses, etc. provided by another group, such as ARMA, BFMA, PMI, or a vendor, CIPs will need to document the format and length of the event, objectives, the topic, and attendance.
Certified Information Professionals can submit CEUs using this form. CIPs may receive credit for no more than 25 CEUs in a single calendar year.
Examples of qualifying events would include, but are certainly not limited to:
- Attending or presenting at chapter meetings for information management-related topics
- Attending webinars delivered by AIIM, vendors or other associations on information management-related topics
- Attending or speaking at an industry conference, such as the AIIM conference
- Attending a formal course of academic instruction on an information-related topic
Examples of non-qualifying events would include, but are not limited to:
- Serving on an association chapter, regional, or national or international board of directors or committee
- Attending a meeting unrelated to information management, for example a chapter meeting on dressing for success
- Attending a social event without educational content such as a mixer or awards banquet
It is not necessary to be a member of AIIM to maintain the certification.
CIPs who have questions about whether a particular event or content offering is valid for CEUs are encouraged to contact AIIM at certification@aiim.org.
