Enterprise Content Management (ECM) Training Program

Course Descriptions

The Enterprise Content Management (ECM) Training Program consists of the following tracks:

  • ECM Strategy
    Onsite workshop only available on request to organizations that need to brief executives or users about the expected benefits, steps and resources for implementing ECM. For more information about the strategy workshops or to schedule one, send an email to training@aiim.org
  • ECM Practitioner (online or classroom training available)
    Covers concepts and technologies for ECM while also incorporating the main elements from the ECM Strategy track. The Practitioner classroom sessions are always the first two days of the four-day master class. 
  • ECM Specialist (online or classroom training available)
    Covers global best practices for implementing ECM, building upon the topics covered in the Practitioner track. Students who have earned the Practitioner designation may either take the online ECM Specialist course to earn the Specialist designation, or, register for the last two days of a four-day Master class as a Master Prep student (these students will achieve the Master designation after passing an exam and case study assignment).
  • ECM Master
    • Classroom Course
      Provides a thorough understanding of ECM with the main elements from all of the above, in addition to case study exercises. No prior participation in other tracks is required to enroll.
    • Preparation Workshop
      Allows individuals who have already completed the Practitioner and Specialist Training Programs to discuss, share, and learn global best practices for ECM.

You can either start directly with the Master Classroom Course or first take Practitioner and Specialist online or classroom courses, before taking a Master Preparation Workshop.

The ECM Practitioner program (What is ECM?)

11 online modules or 2 day training class

The new and improved ECM Practitioner program covers strategies, methods and tools for managing content. The course covers ECM technologies and their business benefits, but also how to plan ECM with an information architecture, metadata and taxonomies. The new course also includes changes in the vendor landscape; increased focus on imaging and recognition; process improvement and automation; impact of Web 2.0; and new best practices and standards.

The ECM Specialist program (How to implement ECM?)

10 online modules or 2 day training class

The new and improved ECM Specialist program covers global best practices for implementing ECM using the open methodology MIKE2. The course covers how to develop an ECM strategy or blueprint, how to identify and prioritize the business requirements for ECM, how to develop and define the technology requirements for ECM, how to build an ECM roadmap and prioritize projects based on the blueprint, how to develop, test and train, and how to deploy, operate and close-out an ECM implementation. The course also covers how to design a taxonomy, metadata, and security model, but we recommend that you take the ECM Practitioner course before starting the ECM Specialist course.

The ECM Master program (Putting it all together)

4 day training class

The ECM Master Training Program comprises the main elements from the above strategic workshop and certificate programs in addition to a case study exercise. The course provides complete coverage of enterprise content management for professionals working in both the public and private sector.

Participants will use their newly gained knowledge to plan, design, and implement an ECM project based on case study exercises and expertise learned from the Strategic, Practitioner, and Specialist Course programs.

ECM Master Preparation Workshop

5 day virtual training class

For individuals who have both the ECM Practitioner and Specialist designations.

The ECM Master Preparation Workshop is a highly interactive workshop that enables you to learn, share and discuss global best practices for ECM. The course provides a summary of the main elements from the Strategic, Practitioner and Specialist training courses in addition to additional information, exercises and case studies.
