More organizations are finding that they need professionals with a broader skill set than what is traditionally found within traditional records management or IT departments. Specifically, they need staff that understand the management, utilization, and application of information and social assets to the organization. They need a new breed of information professional.

With that in mind, in 2011 AIIM built a comprehensive body of knowledge around the needs of information professionals, and an exam designed to measure information professionals against that body of knowledge.

More than four years and 1,000 CIPs later, it is clear that we struck a chord. But it was also clear that the information management industry – its processes, its standards, its technologies – changes rapidly, and that we would need to update the CIP at regular intervals to ensure that it remained relevant.
