Governance
SharePoint Community Wiki
A governance program is designed to control and direct how information is created and managed in the enterprise. The program will include policies, goals, authorities, decisions, and a program definition. Specific configuration of security and access controls will help the organization achieve appropriate adherence to the policies and goals developed in a SharePoint governance plan.
Governance Types
Governance can be applied according to six different perspectives:
- Content governance addresses how content is created, controlled, managed, and identified through metadata permissions and templates.
- Classification governance addresses the structure and organization of the content within the enterprise. Classification governance includes definitions of content types, use of, and the management of, taxonomies and terms.
- Functionality governance addresses what kinds of features and capabilities users and administrators can use or configure. Functionality ranges from turning features on and off, creating sites and changing the user interface.
- Development governance deals with the creation of new application functionality, including the ability to manipulate and implement code through Visual Studio, creating new web parts and new applications.
- Security governance is primarily concerned with the organization and assignment of users and groups to have specific permissions.
- Retention governance addresses the retention duration of documents/records that is achieved through consistently applied metadata, information management policies and record centers.
ConfigurationControls and configurations can be applied at a number of levels within SharePoint.
- Enterprise/cross farm governance includes authentication and connectivity considerations
- Farm governance includes lower level access to features and services
- Site Collection involves function specific control as well as classification and metadata
- Site governance addresses administration of libraries, lists, and content
Application of ControlsGovernance can be applied to content and sites through:
- Various tools including Central Administration, PowerShell, SharePoint Designer, Visual Studio, or ASPC page editing.
- Inheritance when content types are created from parent content types.
- Site templates when acceptable configurations are established then propagated when a new site is set up
- Solutions, which can be combinations of content, settings, web parts and other components, applied to sites
